Welcome back. I hope everyone had a chance to relax and spend time with family over the Thanksgiving break. We are starting a basketball unit for1st and 3rd block that will last until the Christmas break.
4th block weight training will continue to work out getting ready for their max test in a few weeks

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
1.  Each student will be trained in safety techniques and proper techniques for weight lifting.
2. The weight program is based on explosive movements and quick muscle fiber engagement.
3.  Sets and Reps are arranged in order to maximize the potential of each muscle group used for that specific lift.
4.  This class is designed to provide general knowledge for a life time skill of weight lifting.
5. Students will learn safety of weight training. Will learn human anatomy, sports physiology, and simple biomechanics of the muscle groups we use.

variety of physical activities.

-        35% - Participation –Students must participate daily in physical activity (Performance Standard PEHS.3).  Each student must be engaged in all activities during the entire class period, while behaving in a respectful manner. Students cannot choose which activity to participate in.  Each student will either receive full credit or no credit for the day. Students will be graded daily for participation.


-          25 % - Dress Out – Students must wear appropriate clothing for every activity (Performance Standard PEHS.5). This should consist of tennis shoes, shorts/sweat pants and a t-shirt. Slides, flip flops, sandals, boots, leggings, compression shorts, tank tops, or sweat pants over clothing worn to school will not be accepted as appropriate clothing and will result in a zero (0) dress-out grade.  Students will be graded daily for dress-out.

-          15%- Unit Assessments –Students will be assessed on observable characteristics of skill proficiency (Performance Standard PEHS.1), Fitnessgram testing (Performance Standard PEHS.4), and given a written test based on the course material covered through-out the entire unit. Students will also be given performance evaluations (physical & written). During the performance evaluations students will be graded on using the correct technique for exercises  

-          5%- Common Assessments –Students will be assessed at the beginning, middle and end of the semester to determine student growth based on the content of the curriculum.

-          5 %- Writing prompts/Projects – Students will be given an assignment or set of instructions for an essay. They will explain, define, classify, analyze, compare, describe, convince, give an opinion, or choose a point of view about a particular topic.

-          20%= Final –An assessment will be given based on the content covered during the entire semester.


Grades will be given weekly based on a 100% of Dress out and Participation. All other grades will be posted by Monday of the following week. Students are encouraged to monitor their grades and make any queries where necessary. The grade given will be final once the week has passed.

Please note that when you are viewing grades in Synergy that a blank grade column for your child has no effect on their grade.  If the space is blank, then your student may not have turned in that assignment due to absence or the teacher may not have entered grades for that assignment at that time.  An “X” means that the student is exempt from an assignment at the discretion of the teacher.





GENERAL INFORMATION:

·        Physical education attire (Sneakers, T-shirt, Shorts or Sweat Pants). NO LEGGINGS, OR NO SPAGHETTI STRAP TOPS!
·        Combination lock for locker (Theft can occur and we are not responsible for stolen items that are left unsecured.)
      *Pebblebrook reserves the right at any time to remove a lock from a locker*

CLASS EXPECTATIONS:

Even If you decide not dress for class on a particular day you are still required to participate in the daily workout or activity. Those who do not comply will be insubordinate and subject to administrative referral. You will not sit out without consequence. All or Nothing. Students must dress out in locker room. Students may not dress out in the weight room or in the gymnasium. All students are expected to be in compliance with all class room expectations.


FINAL EXAM EXEMPTION:

Students with no more than one excused absence may qualify to exempt one of their final exams.  Students with a course average of 80 or higher may exempt one final exam of their choice.  Students with a course average of 79 or below may request that ten percentage points be added to the final exam grade.  Towards the end of the semester, students who qualify may submit an Exam Exemption Form to the classroom teacher of their choice.  Teachers must verify that the student qualifies for the exemption.


PARTICIPATION:

Class participation is an important component of the physical education curriculum. Much can be learned from the exchange of ideas that occurs during class discussions. Frequent absences SERIOUSLY jeopardize your success in this class. The participation grade will be based on the degree of student involvement in the learning activities, including attention to and participation in written and oral exercises, class discussion, preparation for class, and all physical activities.  Non dressers will be required to participate, but will lose dress out points for the day. If a student chooses not to participate in an activity he/she will be asked to do an alternate assignment during the activity (walking, or a written assignment), or a referral may be given if student refuses to participate in the alternate assigned activity.  A doctor’s note is required for non-participants due to illness or injury. To reiterate:  If you do not participate, you will not receive a passing grade for that activity.

ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP POLICY:

If a student is absent and does not have an excused absent, he/she will not be allowed make up work. If the absence is excused by the attendance office the student will have one (1) week to complete make up work. If a student is absent from class but is seen on campus, he/she will be considered skipping class and will be given an administrative referral.


LATE WORK POLICY:

If a student turns in late work, he/she would only be allowed to get the maximum of 89% out of 100






TARDY POLICY:  

To avoid being counted tardy, students must be seated and ready for class when the bell rings.  School policy states that students may receive Saturday School, In-School Suspension, and Out-of-School Suspension for repeated tardies.

CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES:

As per the school’s policy, cell phones are not to be used during class time unless directed by the teacher for instructional purposes. Students will receive a discipline referral after one warning to put away any electronic device (unless the device is being used for instruction). Students are allowed to bring certain technologies to class (iPad, laptop, Kindle, etc.), but it should NOT interfere with the teaching or other’s learning.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Cheating is considered a serious matter.  Any student who is involved in cheating/plagiarism will receive a grade of zero on the material, an unsatisfactory in conduct, and his/her parents will be notified.

For this course, cheating is defined as, but is not limited to, the following acts:

  • Copying anyone's answers to questions, exercises, study guides, class work or homework assignments
  • Taking any information verbatim from any source, including the Internet, without giving proper credit to the author, or rearranging the order of words and/or changing some words as written by the author and claiming the work as his or her own, i.e., plagiarism.
  • Looking onto another student's paper during a test or quiz.
  • Having available any study notes or other test aids during a test or quiz without the teacher's permission.
  • Collaborating on assignments when independent work is expected.


GRADE RECOVERY:

Students who score 69 or below on the course unit assessment are allowed to retake the assessment.  The grade will not exceed a 70 for the unit assessment.


CLASSROOM BLOG:

Throughout the year, students are expected to use the classroom blog daily. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check the blog and come prepared to the next class. All handouts, assignments, updates and information will be posted daily to the blog.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: 
  • This class provides students with the opportunity to explore a variety of sports. Most of these sports the students may have seen in middle school but will now be taken to a higher level. The student will now apply strategies and tactics to the sport for effective results, and develop the skill base needed to play the sport.
  • The instruction with this course is to help prepare the student with skills, knowledge & understanding of rules and game strategies that will give the student the confidence to tryout for one of the schools competitive varsity sports.
  • It is also the ultimate goal to develop the love of sports and physical activity in the student so that it carries over into their lives outside of school and something they maintain as adults.

GRADING POLICY: 
Students will be graded based  on the following criteriers and their description.
-        Dressing Out – All student must wear the appropriate clothing for the activity, tennis shoes, shorts/sweats and t-shirt. Sliders or slippers, sweat pants over clothing, boots will not be accepted as appropriate clothing and will result in a zero (0) grade for dressing out that day.
-        Participation – This is the highest percentage grade as seen below and has a large affect on the final grade. The student must participate in all class activity unless advised not to by a Doctor’s note. Students cannot choose what activity they want to participate in, it is a all or nothing policy. Full participation for a 100% grade.
-        Common Assessments – These are given at the beginning of the semester and at the end to assess student growth based on the content of the curriculum.
-        Unit Assessment – This is given at the end of every unit to test the students knowledge of the material that was  covered in the unit
-        Writing prompt – To aide in the development of student writing skills we will have a writing prompt for each unit on a variety of sports topics and current events in sports for students to express themselves in a written format.
-        SLO – Student Learning Objectives, given at the beginning and end of the semester to determine student growth.
-        Final – The student will take an exam that will cover the all the material covered in the class for the semester.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Physical education activity classes are fun, and a great source of aerobic and cardio fitness activity. It is also a great way to relieve stress and improve mental processing ability due to the flow of blood to the brain. It is a win, win situation. Come ready to have fun and learn familiar sports at a higher and strategic level.
Here is a snapshot of some of the activities we will be doing this semester.

Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, Flag Football, Handball, Floor Hockey, Soccer and Ultimate sports games.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Positive attitude!


DONATION REQUEST:
 Flags for flag football, footballs, soccer balls, jump ropes, bean bags, large cones and any PE equipment that is in good condition.

It is the pleasure of the physical education department to teach each and every student that belong to the activity classes. In Team Sports this week, I will start each class by going through the roll having them dress and then we go through our dynamic warm up then our static stretch. I will have captains pick teams for round robin volleyball tournament this week with the other PE classes. This tournament will be used to place the top teams into bracket play for next weeks tournament.






In weight training, the students will begin a 9 week cycle that will consist of 3 phases.
1. The Base Phase for 3 weeks
2. The Development Phase for 3 weeks
3.  The Peak Phase for 3 weeks
At the end of the 9 week cycle, they will be retested on their lifts for growth

I hope you had a wonderful first week of school. This week we will start to pick up the pace in my team sports and weight training classes, We will take our final assessment test on Monday and Tuesday we will also learn our dynamic warm-up and our static stretch. Review the history of volleyball, learn the skills needed to play and practice those skills then go into game play.


In weight training, we will take our assessment test on Monday and Tuesday go into the weight room and talk bout how to be safe and learn how to spot then crank up the lifting on Wednesday for the rest of the week
